What would you do if you didn’t have to make your monthly mortgage payment? When you finally finish paying your mortgage. It wouldn’t be very prudent to blow all of your savings. But you deserve at least one small, fun thing after paying your mortgage so faithfully for such a long time.
Given our current pandemic restrictions, you’ll probably have to create a new fun tradition. Here are a few ideas to consider.
1. Order the Perfect Gift for Someone Special
Wouldn’t it be fun to splurge on someone you love without waiting for a holiday or a special occasion? If you feel safe enough, you can venture out to whatever shops and boutiques have opened their doors. If you prefer to stay at home, you can spend time browsing your favorite online stores. Most stores will deliver whatever you want wherever you want.
2. Find a Fun New Car
A few years ago, you would never have thought about buying a car without taking it for a spin. Dealers didn’t offer that option until retailers like Carvana changed the online car-buying experience. But now the moment has come where you don’t have to worry if you have to finish paying your mortgage. Now, many dealerships allow you to browse cars online and then arrange your financing. You take delivery at your front door in a “touchless” experience. You never have to deal with a salesperson face-to-face.
3. Buy a High-End Bicycle
If you enjoy exercise but don’t want to visit a gym, a mountain bike, trail bike, or e-bike will give you a joyful new outdoor experience. You can buy a single bike or a pair if you want to hit the trails with a companion.
Local bike shops are arranging their stores to ensure social distancing while shopping. If you prefer not to enter a store, you can order your bike online. Some shops offer curbside pickup, or they will deliver your new bicycle to your door.
4. Plan a weekend getaway
Wouldn’t it be great to fly to your favorite island or beachfront city? You can probably do that if you want, but it’s not exactly safe. Instead, why not plan a fun weekend road trip where you can limit your contacts and your risk. Here’s some information to help you plan a few days away.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention realizes that you need to get out of lockdown. They’ve issued vacation guidance to help plan your trip.
- Connecticut State Park and State Forest campgrounds are now open for limited camping experiences. Governor Lamont has issued guidance on camping in Connecticut.
- Try taking a road trip to a destination that’s close to home. Consider renting an Airbnb single-family home or a condo to minimize the chances of connecting with strangers.
5. Set Up a Future Fun Fund
If “safe vacationing” or online shopping doesn’t sound like much fun, you can put aside some cash for future fun experiences. Now that the question, “how long do you have until you finish paying your mortgage?” no longer exists. The pandemic will end someday. In the meantime, you can establish a fund and have fun dreaming up ideas to use it when the time is right.
